“Do not follow my opinion, nor the opinion of Maalik, nor Shaafi’, nor Awzaa’ee, nor Thawree, but take from where they took”
(Imaam Ahmad, I’laam 2/302)

Islamic Rulings-

Taking from where the scholars took

This Months Scholar:

Abu Ja’far Muhammad Ibn Jareer At Tabari (died 310 AH)

Inshaa'Allah in this section we will be dealing with verdicts issued by various Scholars.  However the key theme will be to 'Take from where the Scholars took' in order to eliminate Taqleed (blind following) and facilitate our understanding of the evidences. Instead this was the methodology of the pious predecessors during the early years of Islam.  Imam Ahmad (May Allah have mercy upon him) eloquently summarized this great principle when he said, "Do not follow my opinion, nor the opinion of Maalik nor Shaafi, nor Awzaa'ee, nor Thawree, but take from where they took. (I'laam 2/302)

Question:

How do the hypocrites commit mischief on earth?

Answer:

‘The hypocrites commit mischief on earth by disobeying their Lord on it, and continuing in the prohibited acts. They also abandon what Allah made obligatory and doubt His religion, even though He does not accept a deed from anyone except with faith in His religion and certainty of its truth. They give as much aid as they can, against Allah’s loyal friends, and support those who deny Allah, His Books and His Messengers. This is how the hypocrites commit mischief on earth, while thinking they are doing righteous work on earth.’  (tafseer At Tabari)

Evidences:

And when it is said to them, 'Do not cause corruption on the Earth.' they say, 'We are but those who make peace.' Verily, they are the ones who cause corruption, but they perceive not. (Qur'aan 2:11-12)

The Hypocrites, men and women are of one another. They enjoin what is wrong and forbid what is right, close their hands. They have forgotten Allah so He has forgotten them. Verily the Hypocrites, it is they who are the Faasiqoon (the disobedient ones)  (Qur'aan 9:67)

And when it is said to them, 'Come to what Allah has revealed and to the Messenger,' you will see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion. (Qur'aan 4:61)

O you who believe! Do not take disbelievers as supporters instead of believers. do you wish to offer Allah manifest proof against you? (Qur'aan 4:144)

Abu Waih narrated that Hudhaifah bin Al-Yaman said, 'The hypocrites of today are worse than those of the lifetime of the Prophet, because in those days they used to do evil deeds secretly but today they do such deeds openly.' (saheeh of bukhaari)
