I am a Lebanese American who recently made a visit with my children to my home land. In the middle of our vacation a war broke out between Lebanon and Israel . We were stuck in the middle of it. Undoubtedly this brought back many memories of turmoil and insecurity in my life and because of that my opinion may seem stronger than if I had not been there this summer. I was recently asked to make a comparison between my country and America.

Lebanon is a beautiful country. Our windows are always open, visitors are always knocking at our door and food and family is abundant. However, because of the political citation in Lebanon for the past 25 years, we have been unable to live peacefully and fully enjoy the richness of life. War has caused severe economic hardship on the people not to mention the amount of loss that always seems to be a part of our life. Inevitably crime rises and a second insecurity comes into play. Doors are locked more often and food is not as available. Sometimes markets are empty because trucks cannot deliver food. Even though some food is available to us from the country side, it makes life more difficult.
Can We Really Judge Between Us?
Electricity is rationed and water is sometimes also unavailable. Medical attention is not always available and sometimes you cannot get to it by car if for example they are bombing.

Living in America is very different. Bad news is reported on the TV, it is not something that we experience personally ourselves. Things seem to be more surreal from this point of view and life is less stressful. My children go to school comfortably and we do not worry about bombs and air attacks. I rarely worry if I will see them for the last time when they go out the door. In Lebanon we do think of this every day. Money for the most part is available here all the time as the economy is more stable, and if you keep to yourself and watch where you go it is relatively safe to go anywhere in America. In Lebanon street violence is a direct cause of war due to the people’s oppression, in America violence seems to be a choice. This constant stability creates the perfect environment for people to achieve their goals and for that reason American’s and those who come to live in America face less challenges trying to achieve their goals. The government is always stable and documents are easier to obtain here than they are in Lebanon . In fact everything seems easier here except for personal relations. American society being as efficient as it is discourages human interaction. When one is self sufficient he is not in as much need of others and relationships are more difficult to establish. This is the biggest downfall I see in American society. It would be perfect if we could apply a little of both worlds here.

Happiness is subjective and often times influenced in accordance with a particular bias. In the case of someone with many memories of a particular place, it is also impossible to validate any of their writings as fact. For this reason I can only apply passing observations to my paper and not solid conclusions. In summary it is unfair to think you can judge between these two societies and do one or the other justice as they are two different worlds.
