Altered coasters
Crafts to make for Kids

Simple step-by-step instructions by Sister Ridani

What you need:

Plain coasters. (you should be able to get these from craft stores, in many shapes, if not any coaster will do)
Glue eg Mod podge, PVA glue
Patterned paper (this is available from scrap booking stores in 12” x 12” size, if you have no scrapbooking stores any patterned paper will do)
Sand paper or nail file
Scissors or craft knife
Small ink pad in a colour that matches your patterned paper
Craft pieces to decorate  eg Ribbon, small stickers, sticker letters, stamps, pens, flowers, buttons.

First cut your paper to a size just slightly bigger than your coaster.

This next part you can do 1 of 2 ways. You can either trace the shape of the coaster onto the back of the patterned paper, and cut it out and glue onto your coaster.

Or you can put glue onto your coaster and stick it to the back of the pattered paper. Then once dry cut the coaster out using your craft knife.

Once your glue is dry, take you sand paper or nail file, and file the edge of the
paper so that it is flush to the edge of the coaster (make sure you file in a downwards motion, as if you file up you may tear the paper from the coaster.)

Ink around the edges of the coaster.

You now have your background for your decoration. Now stick down any flat stickers, use stamps, etc that you want on your coaster, (if using stamps wait till the ink is dry).

Once the glue is dry, continue to decorate the coaster till your satisfied with the result (anything like buttons etc stick down using a small amount of glue.)
