How The Companions Viewed Knowledge- In Quotes

The following quotes have been taken from the Book of Knowledge by one of the teachers of both Imaam Bukhaari and Imaam Muslim, a knowledgeable trustworthy Muhaddith by the name of Abu Khaithama Zuhair Ibn Harb An Nasaa’ee (died 234 AH). The complete chain of narration for each quote is given in the book, which has also been translated into English.

From the book, FIVE QUOTES by FIVE COMPANIONS highlighting FIVE PRINCIPLES have been selected which should suffice us all.

Principle 1: One should strive to seek knowledge

Abdullah Bin Mas’ood said, ‘Aspire to become a scholar or a student of knowledge or a listener. And do not be of the fourth category lest you be destroyed.’

Principle 2: Knowledge is not beneficial unless it increases Taqwa

Hudhaifah said, ‘It is enough of Knowledge for an individual that he has Taqwa of Allah.’

Principle 3: Knowledge is sought for the sake of Allah

“Whenever a man would ask Zaid Bin Thaabit about a matter, he would say ‘Is this for the sake of Allah?’ So if the person said ‘Yes’ then he would speak. Otherwise he would not speak.”

Principle 4: Knowledge is required for correct action

Alee Bin Abi Taalib said, ‘Indeed there is no good in any act of worship that has no knowledge in it.’

Principle 5: Knowledge should be acquired and taught

Abu Darda ‘The one who teaches good and the one who learns good are equal with regard to reward. And there is not anyone from the rest of mankind that is better after that’
